Earth Science/Ciencias de la Tierra

 

We began our study of Earth Science by studying rocks and minerals. We used properties such as luster, hardness, color, texture and opacity to sort and categorize rocks and minerals. We learned about how rocks and fossils are made, as well as their place in the geosphere. We then moved on to how the hydrosphere interacts with and affects the geosphere, causing the breakdown and movement of rocks, soil and sand which shapes landforms. These processes of weathering and erosion are all around us, as we found out on our field trip to Marina Mar! 

Comenzamos nuestros estudios de Ciencias de la Tierra, estudiando las rocas y los minerales. Usamos propiedades como el color, el brillo, la textura y la opacidad para categorizarlas y definirlas como roca o mineral. Aprendimos como se forman las rocas y los fósiles y también su lugar en la geosfera, luego pasamos a la hidrosfera y como esta interactúa y afecta a la geosfera, causando la ruptura y desplazamiento de las rocas, el suelo y la arena que conforman el relieve. Estos procesos de erosión y desgaste nos rodean y los pudimos observar en nuestro paseo a Marina Mar.

When we arrived at Marina Mar, our groups of 4th and 7th graders used their knowledge of rocks, minerals, weathering and erosion to find examples of each, record their observations, and take pictures with their group iPad.

Cuando llegamos a Marina Mar, nuestros grupos de 4to y 7mo grado usaron su conocimiento en rocas, minerales, desgaste y erosión para encontrar ejemplos de cada uno, escribir sus observaciones y tomar fotos con el iPad de cada grupo. 

After having lunch, we split up into two groups for some team building activities. It was fun and challenging to have to work with new team members that were not in our classes. Both 4th and 7th graders had great ideas to help solve the Magic Carpet Challenge. They also had many thoughtful and interesting things to say during their "Solo Sit". The favorite part of the day for both grades was getting to swim. We looked for rocks in the ocean and were surprised to find other wildlife on some of the rocks. It was great for our scientists to get out into "the field" to see the effects of weathering, human impact and erosion on Cerro El Morro in person. 

Luego de almorzar, nos dividimos en dos grupos para realizar actividades divertidas de grupo. Fu divertido y desafiante tener que trabajar con nuevas personas, que no pertenecían a nuestro salon. Ambs 4to y 7mo grado tuvieron excelentes ideas para resolver el desafío de la alfombra mágica. También tuvieron pensamientos interesantes en su "Asiento Solo". La parte favorita del día para ambos grados fue cuando tuvimos la oportunidad de nadar. Buscamos rocas en el océano y nos sorprendió encontrar otros animales en algunas de ellas. Fue genial para nuestros científicos ir de paseo para poder observar los efectos del desgaste, el impacto humano y la erosión en el Cerro El Morro.
